Music Jam Monday: Rey and Kylo Ren

rey kylo ren music jam monday

Happy Monday! I’m officially back in school, which is terrifying considering I’m graduating and need to figure my life out. So, I’ve been a little busy, hence why there is still no Reylo post about The Last Jedi (TLJ). Sigh. BUT! I have assembled the perfect playlist for Rey and Kylo, ready for you to listen and love. I promise I’ll be off my TLJ kick soon, but for now, enjoy!

“WILD” by Troye Sivan feat. Alessia Cara

Let’s take a minute and appreciate Troye for the incredible musical artist that he is.

Okay, now let’s appreciate how perfect this song is for the beginning of TLJ. Both Rey and Kylo are driving each other wild. Their hearts are doing weird things, but they can’t turn away. Also the “I’ve never wanted to be so bad” line? That’s Rey every time she thinks about Kylo.

Most Reylo lyric: “Can you make me leave my demons & my broken pieces behind?”

“The Cure” by Lady Gaga

While I’m a firm believer that Kylo needs to save himself in episode 9, you have to admit that Rey kinda wants to fix Kylo with her love, even though she knows he has to do it himself. This song also makes me think of the whole “you’re not alone” “neither are you” ForceTime.

Most Reylo lyric: “So baby tell me yes and I will give you everything. I will be right by your side.” (this is more reminiscent of Kylo’s proposal in the throne room)

“Alone” by Halsey

I feel like the chorus and the bridge are super relevant to Rey and Kylo. The chorus is Kylo telling Rey that he’s not really a good person (“you’re a monster” “so are you” connection), and once she ships herself off to him she’s going to wish she hadn’t. And the bridge of the song? We all know that they want to slip under each other’s armor.

Most Reylo lyric: “I know you’re dying to meet me but I can just tell you this. Baby, as soon as you meet me, you’ll wish that you never did.”

“Do I Wanna Know?” by Arctic Monkeys

And here we have some footage of what went through Kylo’s mind before low-key proposing to Rey. I feel like every lyric can easily be applied to Rey and Kylo’s relationship. Kylo wanted to know if Rey felt the same way as him and would stay, he’s (very) sad that she isn’t staying, and I have a feeling Kylo is going to be crawling back to Rey in episode 9.

Most Reylo lyric: “I’m sorry to interrupt, it’s just I’m constantly on the cusp of trying to kiss you. I don’t know if you feel the same as I do. We could be together if you wanted to.” (They were totally looking at each other’s lips and wanting to kiss in the elevator. Just saying.)

“Lonely With You” by No Frills Twins

The whole plot of Rey and Kylo is that they’re both lonely and alone, and they can find companionship with each other, which is this entire song. They both want to be lonely with each other!

Most Reylo lyric: “I know you’re lonely. Come over, let me see. You’re not the only one suffering silently. If you’re lonely come and hold me I wanna be lonely with you.”

“Gotta Go My Own Way” by Troy and Gabriella from High School Musical

Is this a duet between Troy and Gabriella or Kylo and Rey? Please just watch this (the song starts at 2:47) and listen to the lyrics. It’s what happened in the throne room, word for word.

Most Reylo lyric: “We might find our place in this world someday. But at least for now I gotta go my own way.”

“LOST BOY” by Troye Sivan

For the finale, we’ve got more Troye Sivan (because you can’t go wrong with Troye). Who’s the lost boy? Kylo, of course! This is a pretty emo song, and Kylo is the king of emo. It just makes sense.

Most Reylo lyric: “So what are you waiting for? Cause someone could love you more. I’m just a lost boy, lost boy.”

That is all for now! Be sure to read my original The Last Jedi Music Jam Monday, and let me know what songs make you think of Rey and/or Kylo down in the comments or over on Twitter!

The Last Jedi Thoughts (except not Rey and Kylo)

Star Wars The Last Jedi Thoughts not rey or kylo

I just got back from seeing my new favorite movie The Last Jedi for the third time. It’s pretty safe to say that I’m quickly developing a new-found obsession. So, I’m going to talk about some of my thoughts on the movie! This will include everyone except Rey and Kylo because they need their own blog post (I have many thoughts on them). So, here you go!

I loved it. I think it goes without saying that this is my favorite Star Wars movie by far, especially considering that it has now officially sucked me down the Star Wars hole. It has a very different feeling from the other movies – I love how it is ultimately a movie about failure. Everyone fails in their respective endeavors, and that’s a great humanizing theme that I really enjoyed. The character development was also superb. I was never very strongly attached to any of the characters in episodes 1-6, and even in The Force Awakens (TFA) I enjoyed the characters but didn’t feel very attached. Now with The Last Jedi (TLJ) I am extraordinarily attached to pretty much everyone.

Now I want to delve into the different characters and their plot lines in the movie:

I love Finn. The first time I watched TLJ I felt like his storyline felt a little pointless – he failed (which is a point) but I didn’t feel like he learned anything. But, upon my second viewing, I see just how much he’s grown. At the beginning of the movie, he’s running away. He still doesn’t have any strong ties to the Rebels. By the end of the movie, he’s correcting Captain Phasma saying that he’s “Rebel scum.” He’s finally found his place.

I will fight anyone who doesn’t like Rose. She is lovely. She is perfect. I so appreciate her stunning Finn when he tries to flee in the beginning of TLJ. She takes no shit, even if he is a Resistance hero. Rose is a wonderful addition to the Star Wars universe.

Captain Phasma

I love Gwendoline Christie. And I love Phasma (in a she’s-really-cool-but-a-bad-person kind of way). I really hope she comes back in episode 9 (although I find it unlikely. Sad face).

General Hux

Hux is a great character to hate. He’s a bit pasty (just like Poe said) and is definitely going to try to murder Kylo Ren in episode 9.

Poe and BB-8

It might be a bit fair to BB-8 to stick them together, BUT THEY ARE SO CUTE TOGETHER! THE TUMMY RUBS????? I DIE EVERY TIME. But to talk about Poe, I appreciated his character arc in this film. He has got his head in the cockpit, and you can tell that Leia is trying to prepare him for leadership. I like that we got to see him struggle and fail.

General Holdo

I love Laura Dern. Holdo is so cool and I want to steal her purple hair. I absolutely adore her.

The Porgs

I’ve seen a few people complain about the porgs, but they are ridiculously cute and I want to protect them all. 11/10 a great creature.

Luke. Luke Luke Luke Luke. I’m going to try to briefly talk about him, but I think I’m going to have to save most of his character-delving for the separate Rey/Kylo post. I appreciated TLJ-Luke. Age has made him sassier, and it is fantastic. The shoulder brush? ICONIC. He sure knows how to go out with a bang, too! Although almost murdering your nephew? NOT OKAY. But I will continue to appreciate Mark Hamill referring to Kylo as his “naughty nephew.”

Alright, I think I better stop there. There will be more thoughts on Kylo/Rey in another blog post, and a Music Jam Monday dedicated to Kylo/Rey. I promise it’ll be worth the wait! For now you can check out my other The Last Jedi-themed Music Jam Monday here.

Music Jam Monday: New Troye and Hayley Music

Music Jam Monday New Troye and Hayley

Happy Monday! My The Last Jedi Part Two post got delayed because THE QUEER GODS HAVE GRANTED US WITH NEW TROYE SIVAN AND HAYLEY KIYOKO MUSIC. I’m pretty sure I’m writing this post from beyond the grave because OH MY GOD MY EARS (and eyes. can’t forget those music videos) HAVE BEEN BLESSED. I will do my best to refrain from all-capital sentences for the rest of this post, but no promises.

Troye Sivan, “My My My”

I’m pretty sure my soul leaves my body every time I watch this music video. It’s so good???? I don’t understand how Troye is so amazing?????? The dancing kills me. KILLS ME! I desperately need a Troye/Lorde dance-off. I might also need a Perfect Places/My My My remix/mashup.

The song itself is incredible. The chorus is SO! GOOD! The verses are also very good. The lyrics are excellent. I’m just a mess over this song. I also just found out he’s performing on SNL????? I have officially died and ascended to heaven. Hallelujah.

Favorite lyric: “I die every night with you. Oh my, my, my! Living for your every move.”

Hayley Kiyoko, “Curious”

This music video sent me to my grave. This is the queer party that I want to attend. Playing with my heart like that???? NOT NICE.

I was completely unaware that her debut album was coming out. I AM SO EXCITED. LIKE. SO EXCITED. And this song has got me even more pumped. A good beat, good lyrics, a good music video?? What else does one need????

Favorite lyric: “You think of me, I’m what you see when you look at the sky.”

The Best TV Episodes Ever

Text says The Best TV Episodes Ever with an old-school TV

Recently I’ve seen a lot of articles discussing the best TV episodes of 2017. However, I don’t want to narrow it to just 2017. So, here are my favorite TV episodes ever. Of all time. Of all the TV shows I’ve ever watched. Ever. These are the episodes that I continue to think about long after I’ve watched them, and that have stuck in my head for ages. There will be some mild spoilers for the specific episodes that I’m talking about, so be warned.

Bojack Horseman, Season 4, Episode 9: “Ruthie”

This episode does what Bojack Horseman does so beautifully – portray just how brutal real life can be. Watching this episode for the first time, I should have been aware that everything wouldn’t end up being as cheery as Ruthie (Princess Carolyn’s great-great-etc. granddaughter) made it seem. The twist at the end was like a twist of a knife in my heart because it’s so REAL.  Princess Carolyn is my favorite character on the show, and seeing her struggle with such human things is heartbreaking. She’s such a badass, but sometimes even she can’t do it all.

Bojack Horseman, Season 4, Episode 11: “Time’s Arrow”

Bojack Horseman can do heart-breaking episodes really well.  I loved getting the background on Bojack’s mother. This episode did a great job of revealing her own trauma and why she is so terrible without making it seem like an excuse for being a terrible person. I cried a river watching it, and I would watch it again and again.

Friends, Season 4, Episode 24: “The One With Ross’s Wedding”

As problematic as Friends is, this episode is iconic. Chandler and Monica waking up together in the bed? Iconic. Ross saying Rachel’s name at his wedding? Stupid, but iconic. It makes me happy every time.

Black Mirror, Season 3, Episode 4: “San Junipero”

Will I ever be over this episode? Probably not. Will I ever stop talking about this episode? Definitely not. It is the gayest (and by gay I mean queer AND happy) episode I have ever watched, and it brings me continuous joy every time I watch it or think of it. It’s SO GOOD.

Master of None, Season 2, Episode 8: “Thanksgiving”

This is such a well-done episode. I love the time aspect of it and the focus on one specific event – Thanksgiving. It really portrayed the struggles of navigating one’s sexuality with their family. It’s absolutely beautiful and stunning.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Season 5, Episode 4: “HalloVeen”

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is an incredible TV show that I would highly *highly* recommend, but my favorite episodes are the Halloween ones. The gang always ends up getting into ridiculous antics, and it is wonderful to watch. The best, though, is the Halloween episode of the current season where Jake asks Amy to marry him. 11/10 so cute.

Game of Thrones, Season 6, Episode 9: “Battle of the Bastards

I love this episode because of how beautifully it was shot. The battle is so real and intense, and I can’t get over it.

Game of Thrones, Season 7, Episode 4: “The Spoils of War”

This is by far my favorite Game of Thrones episode.  There is so much good stuff here – Jon and Dany going spelunking (which was unfortunately less sexual than I hoped). Arya FINALLY getting back to Winterfell and fighting with Brienne and it’s so good. And, of course, the moment we’ve all been waiting for: DRAGONS IN BATTLE! The whole battle is absolutely epic. The dragon is SO COOL and it’s the best.

Music Jam Monday: The Last Jedi

The Last Jedi

Happy Monday! Today I made a playlist of songs that I feel represent different characters in the absolutely incredible movie The Last Jedi. So, if you haven’t seen the movie, there will be some mild spoilers and some of the song choices might not make sense. I’ve never been that into Star Wars – I thought they were good movies, but I was never obsessed. Safe to say this last movie has made me obsessed, mostly (only) because of Kylo Ren/Ben Solo. His character is so complex and well-written and well-acted that I just can’t get over it. And we all know I love a redeemable bad boy *cough cough Draco Malfoy.* I’ve come up with a good five songs that are Kylo songs, so there might be a part two to this. But for now, here you go.

Finn – “Shattered [Turn The Car Around]” by O.A.R.

This is not the most complex song to pair with Finn, but I think it fits well. He’s very conflicted about whether or not he wants to join the Resistance, and whether he should turn the space car around and help the Resistance or not. He also has to balance his feelings of wanting to save and protect Rey with helping the Resistance.

Kylo Ren – “Bring Me To Life” by Evanescence

I think it’s fairly canon to say that Kylo Ren loves to listen to sad emo music 24/7. Unfortunately, I missed out on the whole emo thing in middle school. I never listened to MCR or Panic! at the Disco or any of those bands. This song is about as emo as I ever got. It was the second song I bought when I first got my iPod in 6th grade (after the Lady Gaga bop “Just Dance”). Also, Kylo needs to be saved “from the nothing [he’s] become.” He needs to save himself, but that’s a discussion for another blog post.

Rey – “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield

Continuing the trend of bops from my adolescence, here’s another one. This song is all about how she’s “unwritten” and “just beginning” – just like Rey. Also the “can’t read my mind”? Guess who can’t read her mind? (Kylo Ren, in case you didn’t get that). Rey is writing her own book and crafting her own story.

Luke – “Should I Stay or Should I Go” by The Cure

This song will always be first and foremost a Stranger Things song, but it also fits Luke’s decisions in The Last Jedi. Should he stay on Ahch-To or go with Rey? Either way there’s going to be trouble.

Leia – “Salute” by Little Mix

Leia can only be represented by a fierce, girl-power song like “Salute.” Plus, she’s a general so people should be saluting her. It’s perfect.

Reylo – “Sign of the Times” by Harry Styles

Ok I know this is kind of cheating because it’s technically for two people, but hear me out (or read my long lyrical analysis):

“Just stop your crying it’s a sign of the times” – Reylo always seems to be crying every time they interact so I think this makes sense.

“Welcome to the final show, hope you’re wearing your best clothes” – when Rey ships herself to Kylo, SHE LITERALLY CHANGES HER CLOTHES! SHE’S WEARING HER BEST CLOTHES TO THE FINAL SHOW OF DELIVERING HERSELF TO KYLO.

“We never learn we been here before, why are we always stuck and running from the bullets?” – I’m not making the connection to Reylo as strongly with these lyrics, but those two always seem to either be fighting together or against each other, so they are always running from bullets (or laser guns or whatever the pew pew guns are called that everyone seems to have) (can you tell I’m a Star Wars fan?)

“We gotta get away from here” – KYLO ASKING REY TO JOIN HIM. NEED I SAY MORE?

“We can meet again somewhere, somewhere far away from here” – ForceTime anyone? Reylo does have a tendency to meet at places far away from each other.

“We don’t talk enough, we should open up” – Both Rey and Kylo (but especially Kylo) have a lot of bottled-up trauma that they should probably talk about…just saying…

“We got to get away” – Yes, you need to get away with each other and live happily ever after. The end.
